1967년 발매된 비틀즈의 노래. Revolver 이후 스튜디오 작업에 몰두하다 반년 만에 발매되었다. Strawberry Fields Forever의 A면[1]으로 싱글컷 되었다. 원래 Strawberry Fields Forever와 함께 Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band에 수록될 계획이었으나 앨범과 싱글을 구분하는 비틀즈의 원칙때문에 앨범에서 제외됐다. 조지 마틴 프로듀서는 두 곡을 페퍼상사 앨범에 포함시키지 않은 것을 인생 최악의 실수 중 하나로 꼽았다.
제목의 '페니 레인'은 폴 매카트니와 존 레논이 어렸을 때 살았던 거리의 이름이다. 덕분에 스트로베리 필즈와 애비 로드 횡단보도와 더불어 비틀즈 팬들의 성지순례 장소로 손꼽힌다. 페니 레인 거리는 18세기 노예 상인이었던 제임스 페니(James Penny)의 이름을 딴 것이라는 설이 있어 이름을 변경해야 한다는 주장이 있으나, 리버풀의 국제 노예제 박물관(International Slavery Museum)의 조사에서 이는 부정되었고, 이름 변경은 비틀즈 팬들의 반대 등으로 인해 무산되었다.
