해트트릭(Hat-trick)은 축구, 아이스하키 등에서 한 선수가 한 경기에서 3득점 달성하거나 한 팀이 3년 또는 3번의 대회 연속으로 대회 타이틀을 석권했을 때 칭한다. '해트트릭'이라는 말은 20세기 초 영국 크리켓 게임에서 3명의 타자를 연속아웃시킨 투수에게 새 모자를 주어 그 명예를 칭송할 수 있었던 것에서 유래하였다.
한편 한 선수가 한 경기에서 2득점을 달성했을 경우 한국에서는 "멀티골"(Multi Goal)이라고 칭하나 이는 콩글리쉬이고 "브레이스"(Brace)가 영어권에서 보편적인 용어
● 해트트릭(Hat Trick : 모자 장난) 유래
축구경기에서 자주 듣는 용어에 '해트 트릭'이 있다. 한 선수가 한 경기에서 3골을 넣을 때 이 말을 쓴다. 'Hat Trick'이라는 영어 단어만 봐서는 이 용어가 왜 '3골'을 뜻하는지 짐작이 가지 않는다.
'해트 트릭'이라는 말이 처음 등장한 것은 13세기 영국에서 생긴 크리켓 게임에서였다. 크리켓은 한 팀당 11명씩의 선수가 공과 배트를 가지고 하는 야구 비슷한 게임이다. 11명 타자 가운데 주장을 제외한 10명이 모두 아웃되면 1회전이 끝나는데, 이것이 보기보다 쉽지 않아 하루 경기가 보통 2회전으로 치러진다. 그러니 투수가 세 타자를 연속 아웃시킨다는 것은 보통 어려운 일이 아니었다.
많은 크리켓 클럽에서는 이런 '위업'을 이룬 선수에게 근사한 모자 (Hat)를 선물했다.
또 다른 클럽에서는 모자를 관중들이 손에서 손으로 돌려 선수에게 전달하기도 했다.
해트 트릭이라는 말은 이래서 생긴 것으로, 여기서 트릭(Trick)은 '속임수'가 아니라 '장난' 또는 '묘기' 정도의 뜻으로 쓰인 단어다.
이후 이 용어는 득점하기가 상대적으로 어려운 다른 스포츠에도 확산됐다. 하키나 축구가 대표적이지만, 경마에서 한 기수가 3승을 올렸을 때 쓰기도 한다.
진정한 의미의 해트 트릭은 한 선수가 3골을 넣되 반드시 연속득점, 즉 3골을 넣는 도중에 다른 선수의 득점이 없어야 하지만, 요즘은 그렇게까지 엄격하게 따지지는 않는다.

● Where Does the Phrase “Hat-Trick” Come From?
The puck recently dropped for the 2014 NHL playoffs, pitting the best North American clubs against each other for the chance to raise Lord Stanley’s coveted Cup. Getting there, of course, requires scoring goals—and some players are so on fire that they score three goals in a single game. This phenomenal feat is known as a “hat-trick,” a term used in a handful of sports to indicate three individual achievements in a given game. But where did the phrase come from, and what does scoring three goals in a game have to do with hats?
The origins of the phrase don’t have anything to do with hockey at all. In fact, the first use of the term “hat trick” comes from a specific cricket match from 1858. Bowler H.H. Stephenson, playing for an all-England squad versus a team from Hallam, South Yorkshire, took three consecutive wickets at Hyde Park Cricket Grounds in Sheffield—meaning he hit the three wooden stakes behind the batter three consecutive times. A collection was held because of his outstanding feat and he was presented with a hat that was bought using the proceeds.
Just when the phrase made the jump to ice hockey and other sports is a matter of debate (the Online Etymology Dictionary says it's 1909, while other sources believe it didn't happen until the 1940s), and the exact source of the phrase being popularized is still fairly hazy. One Montreal haberdasher called “Henri Henri” claims they coined the phrase after they began rewarding all players who scored three goals during one game at the Montreal Forum with a free hat. Another claim comes from the Canadian city of Guelph, whose 1947 Junior-A team was sponsored by Biltmore Hats and dubbed the “Guelph Biltmore Mad Hatters.” As a marketing ploy to advertise its new style of fedora, the company would give away a brand new hat to any league player who scored three goals in a single game.
The Hockey Hall of Fame, however, recognizes a similar story as the true origin of the phrase for hockey. When Chicago Blackhawks winger Alex Kaletawandered into the Toronto haberdashery of owner Sammy Taft in January 1946 before a game with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Kaleta fell in love with a swanky new gray fedora on sale with a gray silk band around the top. Kaleta, however, had just returned to playing professional hockey after serving in the Canadian military during World War II, and didn’t have enough money, so Taft cut him a deal. If Kaleta could score three goals against the Maple Leafs at the game that night, he could come back to the shop and have the hat for free. Kaleta went on to score four goals in the game (Chicago wound up losing to Toronto 6-5) and got a free hat out of his on-ice feat. Taft would continue on with the “trick” and award a free hat to any player who scored three goals in a single game at Maple Leaf Gardens, and the phrase eventually evolved into the three-goal celebratory label we know today.

손흥민(30·토트넘)이 해트트릭을 몰아쳤다. 손흥민의 맹활약을 앞세워 대승한 토트넘은 리그 4연승을 이어가며 다음 시즌 UEFA 챔피언스리그 진출의 마지노선인 4위(승점 57) 수성에 성공했다.
손흥민은 10일(한국시각) 영국 버밍엄에서 열린 2021-2022시즌 EPL 32라운드 아스톤 빌라와의 원정경기에서 혼자 3골을 터뜨려 팀의 4대0 승리를 이끌었다. 이날 측면 공격수로 나온 손흥민은 전반 3분 선제골을 포함해 후반 21분, 후반 26분 차례로 골을 넣었다.
손흥민은 전반 3분 만에 해리 케인의 슛이 상대 수비 맞고 나온 공을 페널티 박스 정면에서 그대로 왼발 논스톱 슈팅으로 연결, 골망을 흔들었다. 최근 3경기 연속골을 알리는 신호탄이었다.
골 감각을 정조준한 손흥민은 데얀 쿨루셉스키의 추가골로 토트넘이 2-0으로 앞선 후반 21분 해리 케인의 헤딩 패스를 받아 추가골을 넣었다. 케인의 헤더를 침투하던 손흥민이 수비 뒤쪽 공간을 파고 들었고 왼발 슈팅으로 다시 골문을 열었다.
