China's leaders are finalizing their political and economic agenda for the rest of 2021 and beyond. This year's "Two Sessions" meeting is particularly noteworthy because Beijing will ratify its 14th five-year plan, a broad outline of goals through 2025 that policymakers have been working on for months. The meeting kicked off last Thursday and will run through the better part of this week.
After dodging a recession last year, Beijing said Friday it expects the world's second largest economy to grow by more than 6% in 2021, which if achieved will keep China on pace to match US GDP as early as 2028. But on the back of the bruising trade war with the United States, China has already called out self-reliance and technological independence as major goals. And as climate change accelerates, President Xi Jinping pledged that coal-guzzling China will go carbon neutral by 2060.

With Europe's vaccine rollout creeping forward, attention is turning to what will happen when the continent's borders reopen. Where this debate could get particularly fraught is over the thorny issue of migration.
Academics working in migration policy are concerned that as Europe begins to open up, populists will latch onto the idea that migrants could spread the virus - whether the evidence is there to back it up or not.
"Anti-migrant sentiments might increase during economic downturns, as migrants can be blamed for taking jobs or overusing public resources in areas like healthcare," said Marina Fernandez-Reino, senior adviser at Oxford University's Migration Observatory.

A California corporation reckons it will soon have the solar system's first luxury space hotel open in orbit, offering spacewalks, Beyonce concerts and fine dining to space tourists at US$5 million for three and a half days. The Voyager Space Station would rotate slowly, at one and a quarter revolutions per minute, to provide artificial gravity about as strong as the moon's.
The VSS plans to accommodate around 100 crew, as well as 300 visitors - tourists, business travelers, scientists, and astronauts, etc. It would be powered by solar power and supplied from Earth. The company wants to start assembling the VSS, in space, around 2026 – but first, it plans to put a small-scale 40-meter "Gravity Ring" in orbit to prove its semi-automatic robotic construction tools work, they will handle the job of assembly in zero-gravity.
