● 등위접속사 - and와 or
대등한 관계의 단어, 구, 절을 연결할 때 쓴다. and가 절을 연결할 때에는 ‘그리고’라는 뜻 외에 시간의 순서를 나타내 ‘그리고 나서’, 앞의 내용에 대한 결과를 나타내 ‘그래서’의 뜻이 되기도 한다. or는 보통 ‘그렇지 않으면’으로 해석한다.
eg. They ate dinner and went out. 그들은 저녁을 먹은 후 나갔다.
Shall I call you, or will you call me? 내가 전화할까, 아니면 네가 할래?

eg. He came not on Friday but yesterday. 그는 금요일이 아니라 어제 왔다.
I speak not only English but French. 나는 영어뿐만 아니라 불어도 한다.

● so, for, yet의 이해
so(그래서, 그러니), for(왜냐하면), yet(그렇지만)는 콤마 다음에 쓰는 등위접속사이다. so that은 ‘～하도록’이라는 목적을 나타내는 부사절임에 주의한다.

그는 아픔에 틀림없는데, 왜냐하면 창백해 보이기 때문이다.
