증거와 숫자들이 내 앞에 줄지어 나열되었을 때
더하고, 나누고, 계량할 도표와 도식들이 내 앞에 제시되었을 때
그 천문학자가 강당에서 큰 박수를 받으며 강의하는 걸 앉아 들었을 때
나는 알 수 없게도 금방 지루하고 역겨워져
자리에서 일어나 밖으로 빠져 나온 뒤 홀로 거닐면서
젖어 있는 신비로운 밤공기 속에서 이따금
아무 말 없이 하늘의 별들을 올려다보았다

When I heard the learn'd astronomer,
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me,
When I was shown the charts, the diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them,
When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture room,
How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick,
Till rising and gliding out, I wander'd off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look'd up in perfect silence at the stars.
