no는 형용사
not, never은 부사
none(=no one), nothing은 대명사
no = not a = not any
'no 명사'를 'not a 명사'로 바꿔 쓰면 부정의 의미가 강조
no laughing matter = not a laughing matter
no는 ‘하나도... 아닌, 결코... 아닌, 조금도 —이... 아닌, 어떤... 도 없는’의 뜻을 지니고, ‘no + 단수명사+ 단수 동사’와 ‘no + 복수명사+ 복수 동사’의 형태로 쓰이며 문장의 주어를 수식하여 글 전체를 부정하는 데도 쓰인다. no 다음에 오는 명사는 정관사 the를 쓰지 않고 무관사 명사로 써야 하고 정관사를 쓰는 경우에는 not을 사용한다.
There was no a taxi on the street because of the taxi strike. (X)
There was not a taxi on the street because of the taxi strike. (O)
(택시 파업으로 거리에 택시가 없었다.)
