About the artist
Kindra Crick is the grand-daughter of Nobel Prize-winning scientist, Francis Crick, who co-discovered the DNA double helix structure in 1953. Born of collaboration, this discovery is one of the greatest scientific advances in history and underpins so many of today’s achievements.
Francis Crick was married to artist Odile Crick and Kindra has been influenced and inspired by both the work and
marriage of her grandparents. Kindra creates art that gives visual expression to the wonder and process of scientific
inquiry. She has a degree in Molecular Biology from Princeton University and a Certificate in Painting from
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
What Mad Pursuit explores the creative possibilities achievable through the intermingling of art, science and
imagination in the quest for knowledge. The piece is inspired by Kindra’s family’s contribution to the discovery
of the structure of DNA.
The Sculptures are a hand painted decorative finish with a tough exterior glaze over the top. However like any decorative painted exterior finish it would need annual maintenance to keep it looking like new. Inside they will last indefinitely but outside they will suffer just like another garden sculpture from the harshness of the seasons. Many previous trail pieces have lived outside but have needed annual repair and as the years pass this starts to become more complex and less satisfactory for the owners. We recommend that for a long and healthy life your sculpture lives indoors.

Kindra Crick’s What Mad Pursuit sculpture was auctioned by Christie’s (London), along with double helix inspired sculptures created by world-leading artists such as Ai Weiwei and Zaha Hadid. The auction raised over half-a-million dollars with all the money raised going towards what Cancer Research UK has pledged to raise for the Francis Crick Institute, a world-leading center of biomedical research and innovation.
The sculpture was generously donated to the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England where her grandfather, Francis Crick, made his major contributions to the study of genetics.
