| What matters is the effect, not the process. Those who unconsciously despair yet put on the mask of optimism are not necessarily wise. But those who have not given up hope can succeed only if they are hardheaded realists, shed all illusions, and fully appreciate the difficulties. Only dogmatic thinking, the result of the laziness of mind and heart, tries to construct simplistic schemes of the either-or type that block any real understanding. A free person owes an explanation only to himself, to his reason and his conscious, and to the few who may have a justified claim for explanation. Will is based on activity, whim on passivity. The greater the sense of powerlessness and the greater lack of authentic will, the more grows either submission or an obsessional desire for satisfaction of one's whims and the insistence on arbitrariness. If the religious system does not correspond to the prevalent social character, if it conflicts with the social practice of life, it is only an ideology. In other words, ideas can become powerful forces, but only to the extent to which they are answers to specific human needs prominent in a given social character. To transcend nature, to be alienated from nature and from another human being, finds man naked, ashamed. He is alone and free, yet powerless and afraid. To be concentrated means to live fully in the present, in the here and now, and not to think of the next thing to be done, while I am doing something right now. Faith, in the having mode, is a crutch for those who want to be certain, those who want an answer to life without daring to search for it themselves. Unrestricted satisfaction of all desires is not conducive to well-being, nor is it the way to happiness or even to maximum pleasure. The difference between being and having is not essentially that between east and west. The difference is rather between a society centered around persons and one centered around things. Man can only go forward by developing his reason, by finding a new harmony, a human one, instead of the prehuman harmony which is irretrievably lost. If humanity continues to consume natural resources irresponsibly and disrupt the balance of nature that provides human life, it will be inevitable that we will encounter the catastrophe of total extinction in less than a hundred years. The bureaucrat is a man who administers things and people, and who relates himself to people as to things. One can only understand the power of the fear to be different, the fear to be only a few steps away from the herd, if one understands the depths of the need not to be separated. In the view of the wise, Heaven is man and Earth woman: Earth fosters what Heaven lets fall. It is desirable to avoid trivial and evil company altogether – unless one can assert oneself fully, and thus make the other doubt his own position. For centuries kings, priests, feudal lords, industrial bosses and parents have insisted that obedience is a virtue and that disobedience is a vice. Reality imposes its law on man, laws that he can only escape in dreams or in states of trance – or in insanity. Man can only know the negation, never the position of ultimate reality. My duty not to remain passive in the world which seems to be moving forward self-chosen catastrophe. Few parents have the courage and independence to care more for their children's happiness than for their success. The supremacy of cerebral, manipulative thinking goes together with an atrophy of emotional life. The cruelty itself is motivated by something deeper: the wish to know the secret of things and of life. Realists who have a special word for each type of automobile, but only the one word “love” to express the most varied kinds of affective experience. If I am nothing but what I believe I am supposed to be – who am “I”? One can hardly overestimate people's need to talk about themselves and to be listened to. Looking for the next thing to do or the newest gadget to use is only a means of protecting oneself from being close to oneself or to another person. Authority is not a quality one person 'has', in the sense that he has property or physical qualities. Authority refers to an interpersonal relation in which one person looks upon another as somebody superior to him. Modern man thinks he loses something, time, when he does not do things quickly. Yet he does not know what to do with the time he gains, except kill it. No man must be the means for the ends of another man. I wonder sometimes whether a person has to become insane these days in order to feel certain things. Lessing once said, “Who doesn’t become insane over certain things, has no sanity to lose.” Lack of concentration makes one tired, while concentration wakes one up. They were freer, but they were more alone. As a child, every human being passes through a state of powerlessness, and truth is one of the strongest weapons of those who have no power. All of us are more or less insane, or more or less asleep. If a person loves only one other person and is indifferent to all others, his love is not love but a symbiotic attachment, or an enlarged egotism. Greed and peace preclude each other. Aliveness always makes a beautiful. At the very moment when man is on the verge of realizing his hope, he begins to lose it. Free man is by necessity insecure;, thinking man by necessity uncertain. They have their big, ever-changing egos, but none has a self, a core, a sense of identity. The sexual act without love never bridges the gap between two human beings, except momentarily. To know and yet think is he the highest attainment; not to know and Yet think we do know is a disease. The awareness of human separation, without reunion by love—is the source of shame. It is at the same time the source of guilt and anxiety. |
중요한 것은 과정이 아니라 효과입니다. 무의식적으로 절망하면서도 낙관의 가면을 쓴 사람들이 반드시 현명한 것은 아닙니다. 그러나 희망을 버리지 않은 사람은 냉철한 현실주의자이고, 모든 환상을 버리고, 어려움을 충분히 이해해야만 성공할 수 있습니다. 정신과 마음의 게으름의 결과인 독단적인 사고만이 진정한 이해를 가로막는 둘 중 하나 또는 유형의 단순한 계획을 구성하려고 시도합니다. 자유로운 사람은 자기 자신, 자신의 이성과 의식, 그리고 설명에 대한 정당한 주장을 할 수 있는 소수에게만 설명할 의무가 있습니다. 의지는 활동에 기초하고 변덕은 수동성에 기초합니다. 무력감이 커지고 진정한 의지가 부족할수록 자신의 변덕을 만족시키려는 복종이나 강박적인 욕구와 자의성을 고집하는 경향이 커집니다. 종교 체계가 널리 퍼져 있는 사회적 성격에 부합하지 않고, 사회적 삶의 실천과 충돌한다면 그것은 단지 이념일 뿐입니다. 즉, 아이디어는 강력한 힘이 될 수 있지만, 이는 주어진 사회적 성격에서 두드러지는 특정한 인간 요구에 대한 대답이 되는 경우에만 가능합니다. 자연을 초월하는 것, 자연과 다른 인간으로부터 소외되는 것은 인간이 벌거벗고 부끄러움을 느끼는 일이다. 그는 외롭고 자유롭지만 무력하고 두려워합니다. 집중한다는 것은 현재, 지금 이 순간에 온전히 사는 것을 의미하며, 지금 당장 뭔가를 하고 있는 동안 다음에 해야 할 일을 생각하지 않는 것을 의미합니다. 소유 방식에서 믿음은 확신을 원하는 사람들, 감히 스스로 답을 찾지 않고도 삶에 대한 답을 원하는 사람들을 위한 버팀목입니다. 모든 욕망을 무제한으로 만족시키는 것은 행복에 도움이 되지 않으며, 행복이나 최대의 즐거움에 이르는 길도 아닙니다. 존재와 소유의 차이는 본질적으로 동양과 서양의 차이가 아닙니다. 차이점은 오히려 사람 중심의 사회와 사물 중심의 사회 사이에 있습니다. 인간은 회복 불가능하게 상실된 인간 이전의 조화 대신에 자신의 이성을 발전시키고 새로운 조화, 즉 인간적인 조화를 찾음으로써만 앞으로 나아갈 수 있습니다. 인류가 계속해서 천연자원을 무분별하게 소비하고, 인간에게 생명을 제공하는 자연의 균형을 깨뜨린다면, 우리는 백년 안에 전멸이라는 재앙을 맞이하는 것은 불가피할 것입니다. 관료는 사물과 사람을 관리하는 사람이며 사물에 관해서는 사람과 관계를 맺는 사람입니다. 분리되지 말아야 할 필요성의 깊이를 이해한다면, 다름에 대한 두려움, 무리에서 불과 몇 걸음 떨어져 있다는 두려움의 힘을 이해할 수 있습니다. 현자의 눈으로 보면 하늘은 남자이고 땅은 여자이다. 땅은 하늘이 떨어뜨리는 것을 길러준다. 한 사람이 자신을 완전히 주장하여 다른 사람이 자신의 입장을 의심하게 만드는 경우를 제외하고는 사소하고 사악한 교제를 피하는 것이 바람직합니다. 수세기 동안 왕, 성직자, 봉건 영주, 산업계의 사장, 부모들은 순종은 미덕이고 불순종은 악이라고 주장해 왔습니다. 현실은 인간에게 자신의 법칙을 부과합니다. 인간이 꿈이나 최면 상태, 또는 광기 속에서만 벗어날 수 있는 법칙입니다. 인간은 부정만 알 수 있으며, 궁극적인 현실의 위치는 결코 알 수 없습니다. 스스로 선택한 재앙을 향해 나아가고 있는 듯한 세상에서 수동적으로 머물지 않는 것이 나의 의무입니다. 자녀의 성공보다 자녀의 행복을 더 돌볼 용기와 독립성을 갖고 있는 부모는 거의 없습니다. 대뇌적이고 조작적인 사고의 우월성은 정서적 삶의 위축과 함께 진행됩니다. 잔인함 그 자체는 더 깊은 것, 즉 사물과 삶의 비밀을 알고자 하는 소망에 의해 동기가 부여됩니다. 각 유형의 자동차에 대해 특별한 단어를 사용하지만 가장 다양한 종류의 정서적 경험을 표현하기 위해 "사랑"이라는 한 단어만 사용하는 현실주의자입니다. 내가 내가 되어야 한다고 믿는 것 외에 아무것도 아니라면 '나'는 누구입니까? 자신에 대해 이야기하고 자신의 말을 들어야 하는 사람들의 욕구는 아무리 강조해도 지나치지 않습니다. 다음 할 일이나 사용할 최신 장치를 찾는 것은 자신이나 다른 사람과 가까워지는 것으로부터 자신을 보호하는 수단일 뿐입니다. 권위는 한 사람이 재산이나 신체적 특성을 가지고 있다는 의미에서 '가지고 있는' 특성이 아닙니다. 권위는 한 사람이 다른 사람을 자신보다 우월한 사람으로 보는 대인 관계를 말합니다. 현대인은 일을 빨리 처리하지 않으면 뭔가, 즉 시간을 잃는다고 생각합니다. 그러나 그는 얻은 시간을 죽이는 것 외에는 무엇을 해야 할지 모릅니다. 어떤 사람도 다른 사람의 목적을 위한 수단이 되어서는 안 됩니다. 요즘에는 어떤 것을 느끼려면 미쳐야 하는 것인지 가끔 궁금합니다. 레싱은 “어떤 일에 미쳐버리지 않는 사람은 제정신을 잃을 이유가 없다”고 말한 적이 있습니다. 집중력이 부족하면 피곤해지고, 집중하면 잠이 깬다. 그들은 더 자유로웠지만 더 혼자였습니다. 어린 시절 모든 인간은 무력한 상태를 거치며, 진실은 힘 없는 자들의 가장 강력한 무기 중 하나입니다. 우리 모두는 어느 정도 미쳤거나 어느 정도 잠에 빠져 있습니다. 만약 어떤 사람이 다른 한 사람만을 사랑하고 다른 모든 사람에게 무관심하다면, 그의 사랑은 사랑이 아니라 공생적 애착, 즉 확대된 이기주의입니다. 탐욕과 평화는 서로를 배제합니다. 살아있음은 언제나 아름다움을 만든다. 인간은 소망을 이루려는 순간부터 소망을 잃기 시작한다. 자유로운 인간은 필연적으로 불안하며, 인간은 필연적으로 불확실하다고 생각합니다. 그들은 크고 끊임없이 변화하는 자아를 가지고 있지만 누구도 자아, 핵심, 정체성을 갖고 있지 않습니다. 사랑이 없는 성행위는 순간적인 경우를 제외하고는 결코 두 인간 사이의 간격을 메울 수 없습니다. 알고도 생각하는 것이 가장 높은 성취입니다. 모르면서도 안다고 생각하는 것은 질병이다. 사랑으로 재결합할 수 없는 인간의 분리에 대한 인식은 수치심의 근원입니다. 동시에 죄책감과 불안의 근원이기도 하다. |
