폼팩터, form factor
폼팩터(form factor)는 제품 외형이나 크기, 물리적 배열을 의미한다. 주로 컴퓨터 하드웨어(HW) 규격을 지칭하는 용어로 쓰였지만 모바일 기기 발전과 더불어 휴대폰 외형을 가리키는 용어로 활용되고 있다.
폼팩터는 제품의 물리적 외형을 뜻하는 말이다. 원래 컴퓨터 하드웨어 규격을 지칭하는 용어지만 요즘 스마트폰 분야에서도 많이 쓴다.
몇 년 전까지 반듯한 네모 뿐이었던 스마트폰의 겉모습이 다양해지고 있기 때문이다.
삼성전자를 필두로 화웨이, 모토로라 등은 2019년부터 화면을 접는 ‘폴더블 폰'을 선보였다.
LG전자는 2020년 9월 14일 메인 스크린(주 화면)을 시계 방향으로 돌리면 절반 크기의 세컨드 스크린(보조 화면)이 하나 더 나오는 'LG윙'을 공개했고 2021년에는 화면이 돌돌 말리는 ‘롤러블 폰’도 내놓을 것으로 보고 있다. 손으로 당기면 말려 있던 화면이 펼쳐지면서 확장하는 형태가 예상된다.
업체마다 파격적인 폼팩터에 도전하는 것은 스마트폰 시장이 포화상태에 이르렀다는 판단 때문이다. 디자인, 성능, 내구성 등이 상향 평준화하면서 소비자들은 웬만한 기능 개선은 혁신으로 느끼지 않는다. 그래서 예전처럼 자주 바꾸지도 않는다. 시장조사업체 스트래티지애널리틱스(SA)에 따르면 미국인의 평균 스마트폰 교체 주기는 2016년 26개월, 2018년 31개월, 2019년 33개월 등으로 길어지는 추세다. IT업계 관계자는 “새로운 수요를 창출하기 위해 제조사들이 폼팩터 차별화로 눈을 돌리고 있다”고 했다.
스마트폰의 폼팩터를 바꾸면 단순한 외관상의 변화를 넘어 새로운 사용자경험(UX)까지 구현할 수 있다. 갤럭시Z폴드2를 ‘ㄴ’자로 접어 세우면 위쪽엔 화면, 아래쪽엔 키보드를 띄워 노트북처럼 쓸 수 있다. 거치대 없이 사진을 찍기도 편리하다. LG 윙의 경우 주 화면으로 유튜브 영상을 시청하면서 보조 화면으로 카카오톡 채팅, 네이버 검색 등이 가능하다. 차량에서 내비게이션 대용으로 활용하기도 수월하다. ‘휴대가 편하다’는 스마트폰의 장점과 ‘화면이 시원시원하다’는 태블릿PC의 장점을 한 기기에서 누릴 수 있게 된다.

Notebook computers, for example, are a form factor unto themselves because they all take the same "clamshell" form, are typically rectangular and open to a keyboard on the flat surface and a screen on the top. Notebooks are also available in a variety of form factors that identify a type of product and market area.

An ultrabook is a category of thin and light laptop computers designed to bridge the market gap between tablets and premium notebook PCs.
A Netbook is a small, light, low-power notebook computer that has less processing power than a full-sized laptop but is still suitable for word processing, running a Web browser and connecting wirelessly to the Internet.
A convertible tablet is a computer that can function as either a standalone touch screen device or as a notebook with a physical keyboard.
2) In electric motor terminology, a form factor is the amount of rectified current emitted from a direct current (DC) power source and is expressed as a ratio of the root-mean square (rms) value of the current to the average (av) current or Irms/lav. If the form factor differs much from pure non-pulsating DC (a value of 1.0), it indicates the possibility that motor and brush life will be shorter.
AI핀
미국 캘리포니아 스타트업 휴메인이 선보인 AI핀은 올해 MWC에서 가장 주목을 받은 전시품 중 하나다. SK텔레콤과 퀄컴 부스에 동시 전시된 AI핀은 손바닥 절반도 되지 않는 자그마한 크기에 약 50g짜리 초소형 단말기다. 자석으로 간편하게 옷에 달 수 있는 AI핀에는 마이크와 스피커, RGB 카메라가 내장돼 있어 사용자의 질문에 답하거나 사진을 찍고, 앞에 있는 상황을 판단할 수 있다.
손바닥에 투사된 프로젝터 화면을 활용해 다양한 메뉴를 선택할 수 있다. 손바닥을 굴려 가며 메뉴를 바꾸고, 손가락을 맞부딪치는 형태로 메뉴를 선택할 수 있다. 주먹을 쥐듯 네 손가락을 닫으면 이전 페이지로 돌아간다. GPS 기능도 장착돼 현재 위치도 파악해 준다. 내비게이션 기능은 현재 개발 중이다.
AI핀 패드를 손으로 길게 누른 뒤 "345 나누기 9는?"이라고 묻자 잠시 뒤 "345 나누기 9는 38이며 나머지는 3입니다"라고 답했다. 휴대폰에서 계산기를 선택하지 않고 곧바로 질문할 수 있어 편리하다. "유명한 K-pop 음악 하나 틀어줘"라고 물으니 방탄소년단(BTS)의 '달려라 방탄'을 틀어주기도 했다.
휴메인 관계자는 "AI핀으로 상상할 수 있는 거의 모든 종류의 작업을 할 수 있다"며 "퀄컴의 강력한 칩을 탑재하고 있어 몇몇 기능은 온디바이스 AI 형태로 진행되고, 위치를 묻거나 정보를 검색하는 등 복잡한 연산은 클라우드에서 처리된다"고 설명했다. 휴메인 AI핀은 오픈AI의 GPT-4 모델 등 다양한 초거대 AI 모델을 활용 중이며, 클라우드에서 작업에 적절한 모델을 골라 사용자가 원하는 답변을 해준다.
