타동사(transitive), 자동사(intransitive)
타동사(他動詞, transitive verbs)는 목적어를 요구하는 동사
자동사(自動詞, intransitive verbs)는 목적어 없이 혼자서 완결된 문장을 만들어 낼 수 있는 동사
"타동사"를 의미할 때 사용하는 형용사 transitive는 "건너서(trans) 가다(eo)"라는 뜻의 라틴어 동사 transeo(transire-transii-transitum)에서 파생된 단어
자동사 타동사 개념
● 자동사
자기 혼자만 쓰여도, 문장이 완성되는 동사
I walk , I go, I swim, I work......
형식적으로는 1 형식 동사로써, 주어 다음에 자동사만 있으면 된다. 하지만 추가적으로 설명하기 위해 부사구가 오는 경우가 많다. I walk to school처럼 to school이 부사구로 왔다.
● 타동사
타인의 도움을 받아야만 문장이 완성되는 동사
They discuss the issue.
He explains the changes...
형식적으로는 3 형식에 해당하는 동사로 동사 뒤에 목적어가 옴으로써 문장이 완성
● 잘 틀리는 이유
특별히 규칙을 통해 알 수 있는 것이 아니라, 사용하는 방식에 따라, 뒤에 목적어가 온다면 타동사, 부사구가 온다면 자동사라고 말하기 때문에, 단순히 영어 단어만을 암기했다면 틀리기 쉬운 문형
● Tell, Talk, Speak 차이
대표적인 자동사, 타동사 구별 문제이다. Tell, Talk. Speak 세 단어 모두 말하다 라는 의미를 가진다. 영어를 조금 더 공부했다면 ~에게 말하다.라고 구체적인 의미를 알고 있는 경우가 많지만 사용 용도는 차이가 난다.Speak와 Talk의 경우 자동사이다. ~에게 말하다를 사용하기 위해서는 to라는 전치사가 와야 한다. speak to her, talk to her과 같이 ~에게라는 의미로 to가 온다.하지만 Tell의 경우 타동사.tell her. tell me 같은 곡의 가사를 상기하자.

자동사는 수동태 만들 수 없다.Be looked, Be arrived (×)자동사는 타동사처럼 목적어가 없는 대신 뒤에 전치사(to, with 등) 동반

(이 새로 발표된 노래들은 매우 인기가 있어 보인다.)
‘appear’는 자동사이기 때문에 수동태로 쓸 수 없다. appear가 ‘~인 것 같아 보이다. ~인 듯하다’의 의미로
쓰이는 경우 이는 불완전 자동사이기 때문에 뒤에는 부사가 아닌 형용사가 보어로 쓰인다.
