극작가, 시인 연극 평론가, 귀환병을 묘사한 처녀작 <밤의 북소리>는 표현주의 희곡 최후의 걸작으로 클라이스트 문학상을 받았으며, 영국인 게이의 작품을 번안한 퉁렬한 사회풍자극 <서푼짜리 오페라>로 유명해졌다. 나치즘을 비판한 연극 <제3제국의 공포와 비참>, 30년 전쟁을 주제로 한 <배짱 좋은 엄마와 아이들>을 집필했다
