● 고래 공식 : no more ~ than...
| The increases in skill and technology themselves have ensured no more of an increase in human happiness or well-being than academic development has ensured the development of good character. | 기량과 기술 그 자체의 증가가 / 인류의 행복이나 안녕의 증진을 보장하지 않는다 // 학업 발달이 훌륭한 인성 발달을 보장하지 않는 것처럼. |
A is no more B than C is D = A is not B any more than C is D
→ C가 D가 아닌 것과 마찬가지로 A도 B가 아니라다. 혹은 그 반대로 해석하면 됨.
A whale is no more a fish than a horse is (a fish).
= A whale is not a fish any more than a horse.
→ 말이 물고기가 아닌것과 마찬가지로 고래도 물고기가 아니다.
● 이쁨 공식 : no less ~ than...
| It is my firm belief that democratic values are no less important than economic success or people’s social welfare. | (~은) 나의 확고한 신념이다 // 민주주의적 가치관이 중요하다는 것은 / 경제적 성공이나 국민들의 사회 복지가 중요한 만큼 |
A is no less B than C is D
→ C가 D한것 못지않게 A도 B 하다.
Jane is no less pretty than her sister is (pretty).
→ 제인은 그녀의 언니가 예쁜 것 못지않게 예쁘다.
위 문장을 고래 공식으로 바꾸면
Jane is no more pretty than her sister is.
→ 제인의 언니가 예쁘지 않은 것과 마찬가지로 제인은 예쁘지 않다
둘 다 예쁘지 않다는 의미가 되어버린다. 정반대의 의미.
그래서 위의 두 가지 구문이 중요
