● 전치사를 써야 하는 상호대명사
’ 서로‘라는 우리말 때문에 ’each other, one another'를 부사로 착각하는 경우가 많다.
그 결과 다음과 같이 잘못된 문장 사용
We like to talk each other. (x)
We like to talk to each other. (o)
They shook hands one another. (x)
They shook hands with one another. (o)
상호대명사를 인칭대명사로 바꾸면 쉽게 정리
She shook hands him. (x)
She shook hands with him. (o)
one another는 대명사이므로 전치사가 필요
● 상호대명사는 언제나 단수
상호대명사에는 복수형태가 없다.
'each others, one anothers' 같이 복수형으로 쓸 수 없다.
We are made for each others. (x)
We are made for each other. (o)
● one another
one another와 each other는 이 자체가 대명사로 쓰이기 때문에 자동사 뒤에는 with each other가, 타동사 뒤에는 each other가 쓰인다. each other와 one another는 동사의 목적어나 전치사 뒤에서는 쓰일 수 있지만, 문장의 주어 자리에는 쓰일 수 없다.
Chemistry is concerned with the way substances interact one another. (X)
Chemistry is concerned with the way substances interact with one another. (O)
(화학은 물질들이 서로서로와 상호작용을 하는 그 방식과 관련이 있다.)
