미국의 아티스트 돈 매클레인의 2집 ‘American Pie’에 수록된 플로리다 민요이자 동명의 싱글.
2017년에 미국 의회도서관에서 "문화적, 역사적 및 예술적인 면에서 중요하다"는 이유로 National Recording Registry에 등재했다.
돈 매클레인이 시인인 토머스 스턴스 엘리엇의 작품 『황무지』에서 영감을 얻어 만들었다고 한다. 가사는 요절한 선배 가수 버디 홀리, 리치 밸런스, 그리고 빅 바퍼를 추모하는 한편, 그들이 죽은 이후 미국의 음악계가 어떻게 변했는가도 살펴보고 있다. 가사 자체에서는 착잡함과 슬픔이 묻어나지만 곡 자체는 아주 흥겹고 신난다.
노래 시간이 8분이 넘는 매우 긴 곡이며, 대곡 계의 전투력 측정기로 불리는 Stairway to Heaven보다도 40초 가량 더 길다. 한동안 빌보드 1위 곡 중 가장 긴 노래'라는 기록을 보유하고 있었다. 1972년 빌보드 핫 100 연말 차트에서 3위, 1958년~2018년 빌보드 핫 100 올타임 차트에선 210위에 올랐다.
제목인 아메리칸 파이는 음악이 죽던 날 버디 홀리, 리치 밸런스, 빅 바퍼가 탔다가 사고를 당한 비치크래프트사 보난자 경비행기 N3794N에 붙여진 이름이라고 알려졌으나, 사실은 이 노래가 유명해지면서 사람들이 멋대로 N3794N의 이름이라고 생각한 것이다. 실제 N3794N은 별다른 이름이 붙여지지는 않았다.

돈 매클레인은 가사의 정확한 의미나 의도에 대해 밝히길 지속적으로 거부했다. 하지만 2015년에 직접 쓴 가사가 경매에서 팔리자 그에 딸린 자신의 작곡 노트를 공개하면서 대략적인 의도를 밝혔다. 가령 2017년 당시 밥 딜런은 인터뷰에서 돈 매클레인의 아메리칸 파이는 자기 취향이 아니라며 아메리칸 파이에 나오는 '궁정광대'는 자신이 아니라 다른 사람일 것이라고 밝혔는데(#), 매클레인 역시 후술하듯이 사실이 아님을 인정했다.
이후 2022년에 열린 50주년 기념 콘서트와 다큐멘터리 "음악이 죽은 날: 돈 매클레인의 아메리칸 파이 이야기 (The Day the Music Died: the Story of Don McLean's American Pie)"에서 자세한 사실을 밝혔는데, 딜런과 엘비스 프레슬리와 재니스 조플린에 관한 해석은 사실무근이지만 해석의 여지는 열어두겠다고 했다. 본인의 원래 의도는 군산복합체나 최루가스, 고전 서부극 영화 수색자 등 "반전(反戰)"이 중심이었다고 한다. 가사도 원래는 "아메리칸 애플 파이"였지만 애플이 빠지는 등 녹음 과정에서 쳐낸 부분이 많다고. 결과적으로 "당시 자신의 심상을 그려낸 청사진이자 자신의 음악에 영향을 끼친 것들에 대한 찬사이면서, 훗날 역사학도들을 위한 이정표 (a blueprint of his mind at the time and a homage to his musical influences, but also a roadmap for future students of history)"라고 밝혔다.
If it starts young people thinking about Buddy Holly, about rock ‘n’ roll and that music, and then it teaches them maybe about what else happened in the country, maybe look at a little history, maybe ask why John Kennedy was shot and who did it, maybe ask why all our leaders were shot in the 1960s and who did it, maybe start to look at war and the stupidity of it — if that can happen, then the song really is serving a wonderful purpose and a positive purpose.
