단수, 복수 헷갈리는 수 일치 암기
● a number of, the number of
a number of (= many) + 복수동사
the number of + 단수동사
"더 단단"
● a number of + 복수명사 + 복수동사 : 다수의 ~, 수많은 ~ (a number of = many)
(= a couple of, a range of, a variety of...)
* a number of + 복수명사가 주어로 사용되는 경우, 실제 주어는 복수명사가 되고 a number of는 many와 같은 형용사의 역할을 하는 것이므로 복수명사에 동사를 맞추어야 함.
A number of people were present at the meeting.
A number of students pass the difficult examination every year.
● the number of + 복수명사 + 단수동사 : ~ 의 수
* the number of + 복수명사가 주어로 사용된 경우, 실제 주어는 the number of 이므로 동사는 단수 형태가 됨.
The number of people who made donations was astronomical.
The number of visitors is 20.

불가산(물질, 추상) + 단수동사
"가복불단"
부분명사 : most, the rest, half, some, all, part, the majority, xx percent

● or로 연결되는 주어구, not only ~ but also, neither ~ nor, not ~ but으로 연결되는 주어구는 보통 동사에 가까운 명사에 수를 일치
